Going Back to School

School is something that I love to do, but at the same time is probably the most annoying thing to do as well. I love being in school. I love the papers, the feelings of getting A’s, and the feeling of empowering my life and learning something new. Recently I decided to go back to school and get another, yes another, degree. This time, I wanted to do it in Computer Science. Maybe I should explain!

I graduated from college in 2010 after nine long years. I took a long time off after my mother had passed away. The main reason for going back originally was to make sure I finished what I started to do. At that time of struggle, I did it for my mother, to make her proud that I did not quit school. However, this time around I wanted to do something for me, something that made me happy – so – I decided to go back to school!

Steve Jobs once said (and I paraphrase here), “You should do great work. And in order to do great work,  you need to love what you do. If you do not love what you do, keep looking.” I work for a cell phone provider and I can honestly say I do not love what I do. However, I can say that I make pretty good money doing it. For those who have followed me in BlackBerry Theme Lab, you probably know what my passion has always been developing and designed. More and more I seem to step away from design and go into developing. I love WordPress, I love PHP, and I love making things pretty with CSS. Don’t worry jQuery, I love you too. But, for me, loving them is just not enough. I did not know them, I did not know how to code from the ground up without looking up or copying a tutorial code line for code line. I wanted to be able to program and develop without having to worry about watching someone else do it! This is where going back to school comes in.

A lot of you can argue with me, “Matt, you do not need to go back to school to code.” I would say that you are 100% correct, I don’t need school. However, I can not stand researching ways to code something. I much rather have work pay for my college degree and this way I get to learn programming just enough where I can pick up other languages along the way. That is my goal.  I read a story about a man who helped a homeless man code an app for Android. It inspired me. Nothing against the homeless man, but if he can do it, why can’t I. After all, this is a passion and this is something I want more than anything.

Future Goals

For me anything is possible. Web development has been great to me but a real accomplishment would be a software engineer. Think about it. Telling someone that you’re a software engineer just has an amazing ring to it.  However, code is code, and I started with web development, and going back to school for software engineer will only help my chances of learning more code.

Also, I would love to develop things for Android or iOS. There is a ton of money to be made out there, and with a few ideas that I have, I might be able to cash in. However, again, it is never about the money for me. Doing what I love is way more important.

Did you recently go back to school? Why? What are you studying? Let’s talk below!
